5 Tips for Forgiving Yourself and Moving Forward

No matter who you are or what you’ve done, there will come a time in your life when you need to be forgiven. Ironically, one of the hardest people you will ever forgive is yourself. When you are having a hard time moving forward and thinking positive, here are 5 tips that can help you to let go of the past and open the door to the present.


YOU will be with you forever. Now is the time to embrace your present and be generous to yourself.

You are the one person who is with you at all times and if you are going to live victoriously in this life, you are going to need to learn how to forgive yourself. Being weighed down by the burdens of your past and your mistakes will slow your progress. Life is about moving forward each day, forgiving others and forgiving self. If you can do all these things with yourself and those that you love, you will live a life that you can be proud of… even when you have done things that you are not very proud of.


Remember to have a little faith. It is the substance of things hoped for and not seen.

It is easy to shoehorn yourself into a terrible person that can never change. However, when you look through the lens of faith, you will be able to see yourself in a new light. Believing in yourself and having hope that tomorrow will be better will help you to rise above who you were and become the best version of yourself. There is no better gift that you can give to yourself or those you love.


Focus on the positive.

What set of eyes are you looking out of today? Are you seeing your life with muddy focus? When you focus on the mud puddle, you won’t notice the flowers. Always looking down in the puddles will keep you from enjoying the world around it and always looking back will eventually leave you tripping or walking into a wall! Focus on the positive things in your life. What is something that is of good report? What is a moment when you felt like a good person? When was a time that you did something that you were proud of? How much do you love your spouse and family? Remember these moments. They will keep you moving forward and in the sunshine.


Do something good for others.

Doing something good for someone else is a great way to get your mind off your problems. Go through your closet and donate items that you do not use anymore to a good cause. Local women’s and children’s shelters are often in need of clothing items for emergent situations, job interviews and starting-over apartments. If you have even more time, create handmade cards for residents at nursing homes, paint terracotta pots and fill them with inexpensive potted plants to take to elderly neighbors or offer to watch the children of a friend while they go out on a date with their spouse.


Become a mentor.

There is no better teacher than one who has been there already. In this way, your greatest mistake can become your greatest opportunity. When you take the time to help others take a good path in life, you will be fulfilling a purpose… and nothing can cure what ails you quite like purpose.


Forgiving yourself is not always a feeling, but a choice. So, go ahead… smile. Be good to yourself, and in turn, be good to others. When you do these things, you will move towards a future where you are free, secure and ready to take on the future with a happy heart.
